LMATS ' Slow bend test is perfomed as part of procedure qualification and production runs. Welded rail sample (1150mm to 1200mm) in length with the weld in the center are subjected to loading under 3 point bending condition so the foot is placed in longitudinal tension. The load is increased in a controlled manner until the rail section fails
LMATS unique portable slow bend testing capabilities delivers these benefits:
On-Site Capability: Portableslow bend machine available for the BHP site, operated by two qualified technicians, 7 days a week.
- Cost & Resource Efficient: No need to allocate internal resources for maintenance or calibration, our fully maintained and calibrated equipment handles it all.
- NATA Accredited
- Independent Validation: Third-party testing delivers unbiased, traceable results
- Faster Turnaround: Accredited process enables quick reporting with full traceability.
- Specialised Equipment: Our 3000 kN-capacity slow bend machine is purpose-built for rail testing, capable of applying controlled bending loads to full rail fracture. This level of equipment is not typically available in-house.
LMATS offers in-house fatigue testing services specifically tailored for rail applications and are currently the only company providing this service in Western Australia.
Our facility can apply cyclic loading under controlled conditions to simulate real-world service stresses. We can test full rail segments to assess fatigue performance, crack initiation, and crack growth behavior, supporting life expectancy analysis, compliance testing, and failure investigations.
LMATS in-house team performs macro/micro examination and hardness testing on welded rail sections. Our capabilities include full sample preparation - from cutting to polishing – allowing efficient and high-quality macro and microstructural examinations by our experienced metallurgists and technicians.
Our automated hardness tester delivers fast and accurate hardness measurements.
Macro test or macro examination is performed on the cross section, longitudinal section or 'Z' direction (through thickness) as an independent test to evaluate subsurface conditions or as an subsequent step of another test to reveal the effects on the subsurface.
Generally macro test or examination is performed at less than 10x magnification. Several semi-finished and samples of finished products are subjected to macro test to reveal internal discontinuities such as impurities, inclusions in rolled products or grain flow in forgings after exposure to appropriate preparation and exposure to chemicals or heat.
Macro test is also performed on the test specimens exposed to other tests such corrosion resistance test, passivation, salt spray test, case depth measurement.

The most common test is weld cross section examination to reveal internal discontinuities, weld profile, weld passes and sequence, extent of penetration and the quality of weld.
LMATS Melbourne and Sydney laboratories performs weld macro examination to satisfy the requirements of huge fabrication industry in Australia. LMATS performs macro examination in accordance with AS 2205.5, ASME IX QW 183, QW 184, EN 1321, AS 1554, AS 3992, AS 2885.2 and similar national and international standards.
LMATS ' highly professional team of Metallurgist, Engineers, Scientists, Engineering Technologists, Inspectors, and Non-destructive testing technicians are ready to assist you by being specialists in many different areas of testing and inspection services that will assist you in complying with the Standards, Codes and the regulatory requirements.
Our services at LMATS Melbourne, Albury, Sydney, Newcastle, Brisbane or Perth cover an extensive range such as:
Mechanical Testing
Structures and machines, or their components, fail because of fracture or excessive deformation. In attempting to prevent such failure, the designer estimates how much stress (load per unit area) can be anticipated, and specifies materials that can withstand expected stresses. A stress analysis, accomplished either experimentally or by means of a mathematical model, indicates expected areas of high stress in a machine or structure. Mechanical property tests, carried out experimentally, indicate which materials may safely be employed.
Chemical Testing
Chemical testing capabilities include advanced trace chemical analysis, diverse analytical capabilities and identification of chemicals composition, unknown materials and chemical contamination. LMATS is NATA accredited in Chemical analysis by Spark Spectrometer and NATA accredited in PMI by XRF Spectroscopy. LMATS operates a state of the art chemical lab, staffed by experienced chemists equipped with advanced state-of-the-art instrumentation.
Corrosion Testing
Corrosion testing helps you estimate component service life, compare candidate materials in your service environment, and help screen your materials and their condition. LMATS is NATA accredited.
Weld Qualification
The types of tests involved in weld testing are visual inspection, non-destructive testing such as Radiographic examination (RT), Ultrasonic testing ( UT or UFD), Magnetic Particle test (FMPI or MPI or MT) and Liquid Dye Penetrant Test ( DPI or PT) read more
Metallurgical Services
LMATS can provide a comprehensive metallurgical service including: Mechanical Testing,Metallographic Tests,Corrosion and Erosion Assessment, spectrographic analysis and testing of all products/materials for conformity to Australian and international standards, including hardness (Shore, Barcol, Vickers, Brinell, Rockwell, and Vickers microhardness), tensile, bending, shear and metallography and more
Hydrostatic Test
A hydrostatic test is a way in which leaks can be found in pressure vessels such as pipelines and plumbing. It is also the most common method often employed. Hydrostatic tests verify the performance of fluid pressure vessels. Using this test helps maintain safety standards and durability of a vessel over time. Newly manufactured pieces are initially qualified using the hydrostatic test. They are then continually re-qualified at regular intervals using the proof pressure test which is also called the modified hydrostatic test. Hydrostatic testing is also a way in which a gas pressure vessel, such as a gas cylinder or a boiler, is checked for leaks or flaws. Testing is very important because such containers can explode if they fail when containing compressed gas.
Engineering structures test
The testing of buildings, structures etc for damage, corrosion, NDT inspections of Concrete and reinforcing, load testing and proof testing of floors and overhangs
Engineering Inspections
LMATS provide a range of inspection methods to various industries to cover your regulatory requirements, some areas are: Gas plant inspections, Petrochemical, Heat Exchanger condensers/evaporators, Mobile Mining equipment – trucks, excavators, cranes etc
Non Destructive Testing
LMATS Non-destructive testing (NDT) technicians examine the physical properties of materials and parts to find corrosion, cracks, flaws and other imperfections, which might lead to unreliable product performance or product failure on a daily basis for our customers.
Protective Coatings test
LMATS perform various protective coating tests : adhesion and bend testing, thickness, salt spray and corrosive atmosphere testing to name a few
