Ferrite Measurement
Phase balance is of particular importance within duplex stainless steels to ensure adequate performance in terms of strength and corrosion resistance. The percentages of each phase are ideally 50/50 but can vary within an acceptable range of between 35–70% in some instances. The ASTM E562 method is applied by sectioning a specimen of material and examining the microstructure using a grid pattern and counting the phases or target constituent/s features to determine the volume fraction present
Fischer FeritScope is a non-destructive method that can be applied in the field to analyse the percentage of ferrite present in a sample by probing the surface. It is useful in construction and fabrication applications where it can be used on welded joints as well as base materials.
